Suffering from Board Approval Syndrome?
Are you still playing “Mother, May I?” with your board? Here’s another way, with ideas based on the principles and thinking behind the Policy Governance system.
Are you still playing “Mother May I?” with your board? Here’s what typically happens: Staff come up with a plan, and then put time and energy into proving to the board that it’s a good plan. The board looks at it (hopefully) and then either decides to approve it, or not to approve it.
Here’s another way. After consulting with key stakeholders, the board starts the ball rolling by creating a comprehensive and concise set of criteria against which all plans and decisions can be judged. Now instead of playing “Mother May I?” staff know in advance what is considered OKAY by the board, and what is considered NOT OKAY.
Directors also know clearly what behaviours are expected around the board table. Back up this process with a monitoring system and next thing you know we have strategic agility, accountability and transparency.
